7 Essential Questions Every Boat Owner Needs to Ask About Marine Insurance

Posted:15/04/2026 04:24PM

Buying a boat is one of the best decisions you'll ever make. Making sure it's properly protected is one of the most important ones.

Sailfish Boats partnered with NBOA (National Boat Owners Association) — America's Boat Insurance Experts® — to ask seven essential questions every boat owner should raise before they sign a marine insurance policy:

1. Is there a difference between coverage from a home and auto provider vs. a marine insurance specialist?

Many standard insurance providers offer boat coverage, but marine specialists understand the unique risks of boating — like navigation limits, salvage, and on-water emergencies — often providing more comprehensive and tailored protection.

2. What should I look for in a marine insurance policy?

Key areas include agreed value vs. actual cash value, navigation limits, liability coverage, salvage, and fuel spill protection. Understanding these details ensures there are no surprises when you need coverage most.

3. Is towing protection included, and how does it work?

Some policies include towing and assistance, while others offer it as an add-on. Coverage typically includes on-water towing, jump starts, and fuel delivery — but limits and response networks can vary.

4. If I'm traveling to the Bahamas or Canada, do I need additional coverage?

Yes. Many policies have navigation limits. Traveling internationally may require an endorsement or prior approval to ensure you're fully covered outside U.S. waters.

5. What factors affect the cost of boat insurance, and are there ways to lower my premium?

Factors include boat type, value, usage, location, and boating experience. Discounts may be available for safety courses, bundling, or having a favorable claims history. It more than likely will not affect pricing for coverage, as insurers mainly rate on the total horsepower of the vessel — but it will cause more underwriting stipulations. Any vessel with three or more outboard motors requires theft prevention and tracking devices to be installed on the vessel for most companies.

6. Does my policy cover personal items, fishing equipment, or onboard electronics?

Coverage for personal belongings can vary. Some policies include limited protection, while higher-value items like fishing gear or electronics may require additional coverage.

7. What happens during the claims process, and how quickly can I expect resolution?

A strong marine policy includes a clear, responsive claims process with experienced adjusters. Quick reporting and documentation help speed up resolution so you can get back on the water sooner.
