How did Sailfish Boats get it’s start?

Founded in 1986 by Paul Hoppes. Like many entrepreneurs, a road less traveled is where you find your next business and maybe your last. After years in the furniture industry, Sailfish Boats founder, Paul Hoppes, Jr. took tooling found in a garage and the benefits of a face up sticker to become a prominent and leading regional fish boat company and brand. To that sticker, what to name your new boat? Fatefully, open a box of stickers and choose the one that lands heads up, after spill open on the ground, and that is what he did. After years of building boats side-by-side with employees, towing around a boat selling and building a dealer network as well as delivery finished new Sailfish boats, Hoppes bought a 20-foot Seacraft’s tooling. This launched the Sailfish brand forward and propelled the boat forward to use the Variable Degree Stepped (VDS) Hull. Still a hallmark of Sailfish today. Now Sailfish Boats has 11 models, center console and dual console configurations, sold through close to 30-dealers in 55 locations in North and Latin America, Canada, Puerto Rico and Caribbean. https://sailfishboats.com

When did you remove wood from the boats?

2004 Model Year was the first time all models were free of wood. Prior to the 2004 model year the transition was taking place whereas some models were free of wood, others had still had wood in the boat. By the 2005 model year, all Sailfish models were wood free

What model and model year of boat do I have?

The US Coast Guard defines the organization and structure of a boat’s Hull Identification Number or HIN#. The first 3 characters identify the brand. The next 5 positions after the Builder Code in the HIN# are up to the builder’s discretion on how to use these positions in the HIN#. Position 9 defines the month in which the boat’s construction was started, character 10 defines the year in which the boat’s construction began and the last 2 digits is for the model year that the boat was built in.

The model year can be found as the last two-digits of your boat’s Hull Identification Number (HIN#)

The model can be found in the 4th character of the boat’s Hull Identification Number (HIN#) after the YSI.

Where can I get the value of my trade?

The best place to go to understand what your current boat’s value is, is from your authorized Sailfish dealer (https://sailfishboats.com/locate-dealer) or a search from NADA Guides (https://www.jdpower.com/boats)

I heard Sailfish is a wet boat?

This is a misnomer. As a result of our VDS hull design, the operation of a Sailfish is slight different than other traditional V-bottom boats. Sailfish boats need additional positive engine trim than most are accustomed to and not much trim tab. This will help the boat get up out of the water and ride on top of the water, getting the bow up vs. wanting to push its bow and bottom down creating a “wet” boat feeling.
